For all my people that aren’t rich and don’t have a 10 lb dog or need to feed multiple dogs, here’s a recipe: (I AM NOT A VET. THIS IS BASED ON MY RESEARCH AND IT WILL NOT BE ‘PERFECT’ FOR MOST VETS) **this is also in CAD dollars and the assumption that CAD food prices (especially meat prices) are extremely high.
I have two large dogs and one is a German shepherd. Base the amount of their weight to determine how much food to give them (2.5% of their body weight is the weight of food they should be getting a day) and then I do 50% protein, 25% carbs and 25% veggies. Then because meat is RIDICULOUSLY expensive in Canada I break the protein down into 20% animal protein and 30% veg protein. In the animal protein make sure 80% of it is muscle meat and then 10% secreting organs (liver) and 10% other organs like kidney. Then for the vegan protein sources I do 45/45% soybeans and quinoa cuz those are the only two sources of plant based proteins with every amino acid (complete proteins) and then the remaining 10% I do chickpeas or lentils just cuz they have higher lysine which is present in soybeans and quinoa but kinda low. For the 25% carbs I just do a mix of oatmeal and sweet potatoes but I see people do brown rice and barley (u do you, oatmeal and sweet potatoes are maybe a biiit more expensive but I think it’s worth it cuz they have slower release glycemic sugars and more vitamins). The veggie mix u can and should switch up but I like an even mix of carrots, and pumpkin and beets, (cheap root veggies) some peas, maybe some bell pepper if I feel like it. Then toss in a can of makeral fish, a couple eggs (idk two a week per dog. I meal prep for a week) and crushed eggshells for calcium, and then I do 1tsp a day per dog of hemp hearts (the third complete amino acid profile but it’s a super food so they can’t have more than that) and there u have it. I’m not gonna lie the first couple times making it it will require a scale and alot of measuring and finickiness to make sure everything is balanced but after that ull get it down to knowing it by cups and it’ll be easier. Just do it in batches of 7-14 days and freeze in portioned bags. For my two large dogs with a combined weight of 160Lbs it’s around 140$-150 CAD a month. I feel like that’s the lowest I can go for the price without taking the meat portion down to 10% and I don’t think that’s healthy. I look at the bags of dog foods in stores and alot of them that are good(ish) brands are like 13% dried meat and the rest filler so I don’t know why when I see all these homemade food recipes they are always so adamant about like 90% meat a couple carrots and peas and then a bunch of supplements. I’ve done alot of research and I truly believe this recipe is adequate and if it’s not perfect I still believe it’s better than alot of brands of kibble. I’m sure I’ll get roasted for something being wrong but realistically we’re not made of money and when I see videos like this it’s always for a 10lb one dog and it’s like 100$ a month. Can’t do it. My dogs are incredibly happy with what they get and I see nothing wrong with it. I hope this helps ur dogs and ur wallet 🙂
I have a 48lb mixed bully and the vet wants her down to 40lbs. She knows that I homecook her food, She just told me to cut her food back a bit. She only eats once a day. but she get some treats during the day How do I figure out how many calories she should be getting a day . I am making her the recipe for itchy skin tomorrow after Amazon delivers the supplements arrive. I am making bone broth today and will be done tomorrow.
Hi can you please verify if the turkey weight is correct in the description? In the video you say you use 2 pounds of ground turkey which is around 907 grams, but the description says 635 grams. Which one is correct?
