I feed my dog 90% raw human food.

How did dogs live and thrive before an English biscuit company thought of getting rid of their excess and call it dog food and thus start the multi billion dollar industry of commercial dog food. Why they ate meat and table scraps of course. How did wild dogs live before we invited them into our homes? They ate what wolves ate- meat. Shorter life spans from disease and heart and fat dogs are related to a high carbohydrate diet with commercial additives.

So wish this had come out years ago, I lost my beloved pitti to cancer a few months ago. It breaks my heart it was probably all my fault. Fed her Pedigree and Milkbones most of her life, quit feeding her the Milkbones when I found out about the BHA, now I find out the kibble I fed her also has BHA. My heart is extra broken, and guilt ridden as well, knowing I’m probably the whole reason she got cancer.

In Asia, Africa, and most non-western nations… people just feed their dogs and cats the scrap and leftovers from their own meals, just like humans have always done since the time of domesticated animals (pets). It’s a proven and successful method since there are millions and millions of pets living healthily and thriving in these nations right along with their people.

In China, pets have never gotten the modern health problems as nowadays, but only since they have switched to feeding their pets with big corps food instead of their traditional table scraps/leftovers. Just as the same thing happening to the Chinese population plaguing problems with problematic westerners’ health issues (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, etc.) since their economy has opened up to western fast food restaurant diets from McDs, Burger King, Dominos, KFC, Pizza Hut, etc.

I don’t know I think raw would be the most healthy diet for a pup. But, to ensure your dog is getting all the correct nutrients and vitamins, you need to be feeding them pieces of the entire carcass. Meat, fat, heart, liver, all the stuff. Just as you would if you were going to do the carnivore diet yourself. You need the fats, and high mineral body parts and organs on that diet to be healthy.

The dogs going to eat all the parts if it was a wolf chewing on a deer. Not just the juicy good cuts with all the fat cut off.

hi dr can you please recommend a safe kibble to start a black lab puppy? my son will be weening his lab puppies in two weeks and I’m desperate to know what Is healthiest and safe to start them off with? thank you so much

I feed my dogs about 70% dry WSAVA dog food (Iam’s active diet). It’s not the best quality in my opinion (It’s a 7/10 for me. Doesn’t contain organ meats or bone, has some lower quality ingredients like meat byproduct and excessive grain, some salmonella recalls. Plus its owned by Mars), but it’s the best I found that definitely will provide my dogs adequate nutrition at an affordable price with lean meat and no "bad" ingredients. Nothing is wrong with that. The other 30% is high-quality, including Ziwi Peak dry dog food, herbs, sardines, eggs, and blackberries, hydrated with bone broth. Their treats include freeze-dried meats, air-dried chicken feet and venison bones, and ears. Even just feeding 30% like this + treats is incredibly expensive but its worth it to have active dogs with few health issues.

If I had a cat, it would be easier to find an alright food. They are carnivores so their food variety is narrower, as opposed to dogs which are (low-grain) omnivores. This means that few if none of the WSAVA options are acceptable. For cats, if it meets AAFCO regulations, its up to you to decide if its good or not. Something like Ziwi Peak + Weruva and toppers suffice well.

I personally would not feed my pets raw processed packaged meat. Only fresh processed, if I had a chance that is (like if they caught an animal or I was trimming a catch). I’m iffy about raw eggs and raw bones, but on occassion I risk it. Raw meat and especially raw organs and poultry are a no-go for me – namely because I don’t want that bacteria in my house or in contact with me, not for concern of my pets. I’m also really concerned about parasites. I am very cautious with raw meat due to some bad experiences and always use gloves when handling and cook it thoroughly (I don’t really eat red meat). Cooked meats, if not overdone, is fine for them – especially dogs. If I had an outdoor dog or cat they would likely get a lot more raw, due to less contamination to me, but I don’t believe in purposely putting invasive animals into my local environment.

Had a golden for 14years. Raised on bones and raw food. I personally made her food when she was a puppy and young dog until I was able to find it professionally made and packaged when she was older. When you make it yourself and add the nutrients you know exactly what’s in it.

  14. @michaeledwards8051 on March 3, 2025 at 11:07 pm

With my dog, I’d get the scrap meat the butcher couldn’t sell (not all the fat)… cook medium to med-well and separate from the pan grease. Go from pan to paper towel then include with Merrick Bison. Sometimes I’d melt a little coconut oil to drizzle on.
    Is this ok?

I love how honest you are. The worst ethical offenders are those in authority. I have had plenty of disappointment in doctors & vets. It’s quite pathetic

  21. @tonyszambor3755 on March 3, 2025 at 11:15 pm

brought to by purina. cmon – salmonella is your reason? can dogs ever get salmonella? common sense needs to kick in here. any kibble is pretty much various levels of kibble. Its either shit or really shit. make the investment for your dogs health and happiness…and less vet visits to the Vet(wait a min…hmmm) — go with a good Raw mix that your dog(which are 98%dna of wolves) loves. If you have already than you know. oh..and wash your hands after is about the only thing humans need to do along with storing properly…the dog will be more than fine with the good bacteria….they’ve been eating it hundreds of thousands of years….

  22. @pkrueger7313 on March 3, 2025 at 11:15 pm

I lost 3 dogs Within a mo of each other, feeding benefit and I still feel bad because it was too late to help them. The vet said , you know it’s the breed not the food. I have learned so very much since then.
I do give a tsp of bacon fat once in a great while in their food.

  23. @matthewlovegrove1790 on March 3, 2025 at 11:15 pm

What about the fat on bacon? What do wolves eat? Bacon very good for humans?

  24. @NickJames87 on March 3, 2025 at 11:17 pm

Why would you handle raw food while not washing your hands before and after?
