Is vegan dog food really better for your dog? Recent studies claim that vegan dog food may be healthier than traditional meat-based options, but is it the best choice for your pet? In this video, Dr. Andrew Jones dives deep into a new study comparing vegan dog food to meat-based alternatives, exploring the health benefits and potential risks of each. We analyze the Guardian-reported indicators of health in dogs on vegan diets, as well as expert opinions on the topic.

While some argue that a plant-based diet can offer a cleaner, more sustainable option, others worry that it may lack essential nutrients for dogs. Dr. Jones provides a balanced view on vegan dog food, its pros and cons, and the key factors to consider when choosing the best food for your dog. From protein sources to vitamins and minerals, this video covers everything you need to know before deciding whether vegan dog food is the right choice for your furry friend.

If you’re considering transitioning your dog to a vegan diet, this video is a must-watch to make an informed, healthy decision for your petโ€™s well-being.

My baby, Marleigh, a 13 year old Chihuahua/ Miniature Pinscher was diagnosed with liver MVD at 4 years old. We tried everything for years to get her liver enzymes as close to normal as possible. We saw an internal medicine vet who suggested a vegan diet. It improved her enzymes significantly. A few years later, Marleigh had to have her gall bladder removed. She also has luxating patella in both rear knees. Pain meds not a good option for her due to the liver MVD. We started CBD oil and within about 3 months her enzymes started improving more and more. Four months ago she was diagnosed with CHF and put on Enalapril and Furosemide. Her vet recommended a salmon based dog food. Well, Marleigh doesn’t eat it well. I also started her on Qunol Ultra CoQ10 100 MG x2, along with NaturVet liquid Salmon oil. I give her a tablespoon of organic ground flaxseed each day, as well as a sixteenth of a teaspoon of ground Tumeric mixed with pure honey. She IS MY ENTIRE WORLD and has been since I brought her home when she was 3 months old. Her vet said her prognosis was a little better than most with CHF since I caught it early, however still not the news us dog parents want to hear. I started boiling her one skinless chicken breast every 3 days so her heart can have the protein it needs. Is there ANYTHING else I can do to help her?

Over the last 60+ years, I’ve had dogs that prefer veggies and fruit over meat.

Thanks, great info. As a pure vegetarian, Asian family, we had a healthy pure breed Pomeranian Spitz & a mixed stray both of whom were healthy over 15 years eating entirely veg foods, as opposed to non veg fed dogs who got kidney failures & allergies eating meat based food, so we’re hoping to get a Lhasa Apso pup soon & will buy Pedigree pure veg or Drools pure veg food.

Hello!!!! Im a new subscriber and I am sooo glad I found your channel. I am a pet mama of two English bulldogs and as you know they are prone to health issues. My one little girl was miserable with skin allergies and I researched diets and food allergies and started making my own recipe for her food. She is thriving, and so is my boy, Jiggy. I have had bulldogs in the past and they have never had store bought food or treats. I’ve made diets that are specific to their needs. My one little girl, Sassy, was two months shy of her 15th birthday when she passed naturally in her sleep. My first boy, King, lived to be almost 12 so there is definitely something to be said for using common sense in the treatment of your fur babies. Thank you for all you do to educate us.

I went vegan some years ago and started researching how to feed my animals vegan in a healthy way. I saw there is no way my cats can change but my research showed vegan food for dogs is actually very good…and i had a vet mention she switched her dog to a vegan diet due to health issues. I still wasn’t sure though so started feeding him vegan kibble with a meat topping…thinking it’s a good balance…I’ve always worried if it was the best choice…he’s 17 and so its hard to tell if it made a difference as he’s got various old age issues…i’m SO glad to see this video from my most trusted vet ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s true he’d eat chicken all day if he could but…I’d eat ice cream lol – so just bcs their fav food is meat, doesn’t mean its what they NEED. I admire and value Dr Jones so much <3

I switched to vegan dog food when my little bichonpoo’s became miserable with his itchiness. He was put on apoquel for a couple of years and it stopped working. Then I researched apoquel and how bad those drugs were. I found vegan dog food. At first I did home made but that didn’t stop his itchiness either. Finally a dog kibble was perfect for him. It’s been several years now and he’s doing great. He does get flare up once in a while but nothing like how it used to be. Even the red staining around his eyes and mouth cleared up. He’s almost 13 and still as active as ever.

Feed your dog real fresh cow meat and it will be healthier and live longest..all they did was cut out processed garbage

  12. @LeckieInstallsLondon on May 31, 2025 at 12:27 pm

been feeding my pup plant based food since 8 weeks and hes doing great. Made the choice to do so for his health, the environment, and the animals. Doesnt feel right to feed our companion animals the body parts of tortured animals bred into exsistance for consumption and greed.

  13. @GlorifiedTruth on May 31, 2025 at 12:27 pm

My dog does surprisingly well on Snickers bars. The main advantage is that this finicky beast truly loves them! He’s been eating 3-4 Snickers a day for about 2 months, and he’s got energy to burn. I think this is closer to a dog’s natural diet than most commercial dog foods.

  14. @Vipergum on May 31, 2025 at 12:28 pm

In April we put down our Minpin mix, Bella, at the age of 17. She was on a vegan diet for about the last 4 years of her life. My only regret is not having started the vegan diet sooner.

Iโ€™m so so happy I discovered your channel! I feed my dogs Vegan diets because I did extensive research and found that it was best for many reasons, including the fact that the animal Agritorture industry puts the worst โ€œingredientsโ€ into all those dog food brands. Itโ€™s horrendous not just because of the animal cruelty of enslaving, sexually violating, torturing and killing of the farmed beings as sentient as those we call of โ€œpetsโ€… but also it terribly unhealthy for our dogs. A few years ago I switched my dogs to Halo Vegan food (canned and dry to mix) and I also feed them V-Dog food ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŒฑโœŠ๐Ÿป The only thing I had to change was not giving them many fresh cooked peas as part of their daily snacks, as that is a protein they were already getting plenty of from their meals. I also give them baby carrots, sliced strawberries, blueberries, bell peppers, *dog* applesauce (the human kind might have toxic peels in it), Vegan fruitable treats, a tiny amount of broccoli, etc. all non-toxic, safe snacks for dogs. All my dogs love veggies and fruit! Recently I started adding a veggie and other dehydrated oatmeals to their food or for a snack because it only takes 15 mins or so with hot water to let sit and simply add to their food. I wish I knew long ago how vital moisture is for animals in their food, just as it is for humans! In addition to a healthy diet, I give them only filtered water to potentially help prevent bladder and/or kidney stones, donโ€™t overfeed them as a way of โ€œshowing loveโ€, give them the best daily liquid vitamins for better absorption, and wash their paws after every walk. I do this to wash as much off the super toxic chemicals they have to walk on out there, because car oil, pesticides, weed killers, ect, are literally killing our cats and dogs! Domestic and wildlife! All of us…but especially cats and dogs because they donโ€™t wash their paws like we wash our hands and they lick their fur and paws where all those toxic chemicals are! Again, I wish I had started that loooong ago, but I was not even aware until reading more and more about how these chemicals are everywhere on sidewalks, grass and streets, and seriously harming/killing our furbabies with causing cancer and illnesses.

My 11 year old German Shepherd was having GI issues and Anxiety and joint pain. I switched her to Natural Balance Vegan dry food as a base (she loves it) and every meal I add the animal protein with either cooked lean ground beef, boiled skinless boneless chicken, or soft boiled egg. She is doing amazingly. I just hated the animal bi product issues of dry food, so the way I found to effectively eliminate those nasty issues was to cut out all animal bi product from her food and start with the vegan dry base adding human grade meats. She also gets fresh baby carrots for her treats.

  18. @Vegan-becomes-you on May 31, 2025 at 12:31 pm

Many many dogs thrive and live long healthy lives on a vegan diet done correctly. We need to be open-minded to the possibility that a vegan diet may even be better, better for the dog, for the animals, and for the environment. Also, all major veterinary schools in the US are sponsored by kibble industries and that’s why vets constantly push kibble, the worst possible food for our pets. That’s all they know. We need to be open to new knowledge and challenging the status quo.

  19. @ilfautdanser9121 on May 31, 2025 at 12:31 pm

this is ultimately an associational study that relies on non-scientists to make assessments of their pets. vegans saying their dogs were healthier on a vegan diet, who would’ve guessed? sorry, but dogs are flexible carnivores. i’ll stick with the raw–muscle meat, all different kinds of organ meat + tripe, and some canned sardines cuz she doesn’t like them raw. she’s happy, lean, fit, and healthy. she also doesn’t need flea treatment cuz they’re not interested, ticks still ride with her but i can easily remove those.

  20. @cassondralynch6342 on May 31, 2025 at 12:32 pm

They should’ve included a varied meat diet as well such as ground beef mixed with sweet potatoes and other veg. That would’ve been superior, right? I would think so but cool study and glad they did it!

  21. @HonestLawyersNeeded on May 31, 2025 at 12:32 pm

About a year ago I started feeding my little 10 year old dog boiled vegetables because I found that cracking open the commercial dog can was making me sick. Not literally. I just couldn’t keep doing it. I boil potato, pumpkin, carrot, celery including the leaves, kale and spinach when I have it growing. I thicken it with corn starch. Basically its what I eat. I used to give the dog peas but she started leaving them so I stopped. Obviously she read the internet news about peas and cancer in dogs (kidding but it did happen the same time.) What I add that makes her slide sideways turning the corner in her rush to get to her dinner, is slightly fried egg. She eats everything at first offer – unless she’s eaten too much dry food earlier in the day. Her fur coat has never looked healthier and she has the same amount of energy that she has had so far in her long life.

    Nonsense

  24. @darkshaman7087 on May 31, 2025 at 12:36 pm

Dogs are omnivorous and mainly eat a diet of meat protein, in the wild they hunt to eat meat and you will never see a dingo raid the farmers cabbage patch but they would happily kill a sheep for food and if that is not learning you something you should keep a pet rabbit instead of a dog… Vegans eat veggies etc as its their choice and also they don’t cruelty which they are causing to their dog as not giving it a died of what their dog should be eating as you are making them eat like yourselves and not giving the animal a choice of what it should be consuming… What would you vegans say to me if I had a pet rabbit and fed it tinned dogs food and not git it a choice of veggies to consume?

  25. @Luv2Paddle on May 31, 2025 at 12:38 pm

Iโ€™ve been feeding my 13 year old for about 5 years a v-dog vegan dog food which I supplement with cooked sweet potatoes and various other veggies. Recently she had her teeth cleaned and so the vet did her bloodwork and commented on great her bloodwork was for a dog her age. Many people comment that they also think she is younger than she really is.

I feed my dog vegan, chickbeans, Vegetables, Flaxsseedoil, Rice and he absolutely loves it. His coat looks healthy. We stay with that. Better than mRNA vaccined animals what is now our meat. We, the owner as well changed because of this to a plant based diet.

No not and never, tee hee. Fruits and vegs in all amounts yes but it’ meats. The difference between thriving or surviving. The problem is often humans can’t feed themselves. Look at their teeth, vegan does not cut it. Talk to rescuers that have gone to raw and get the facts. Bias and greed definitely flaws any study. 36 or 40 are numbers that are very close.

I have two dogs one a Boston terrier and one a teacup Chihuahua both of them have skin allergies I have tried various shampoos I have change their dog food to grain free nothing seems to work Iโ€™ve always fed Pedegree lamb and rice and so I have recently went back to pedigree lamb and rice and added a couple of tablespoons of grain free canned dog food in the evening to their food Iโ€™m still struggling with itchy skin I have no idea what to do now Iโ€™ve been told to give them Benadryl once a day but I hear Benadryl is bad for your liver so I am at a loss as to what to give or what to do and Veterinarian bills are very expensive I have six cats and two dogs. Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated. I lost my husband September 13 of 2021 and so now my income has been cut drastically and so now Iโ€™m having to figure out a different way to take care of my animals and less I have to figure out a way to rehome them and I donโ€™t wanna do that I just want to take care of them to the best of my ability I love my animals itโ€™s just getting very frustrating

We’re vegetarian but because we have an emotional support dog, we feed him with non vegeterian dog food once a day. We tried to give him chicken, eggs and all during some days a week but he hates it. It’s hard for us to even touch such things but we love our dog and to our surprise, he didnt like them at all.
He only likes plain rice cakes, wheat breads with juicy fruits like mangoes, papayas or watermelons, mashed potatoes, and chenna with wheat bread.
We use one meal non vegeterian dog food and the other with one of above options.
As a vegeterian i believe we cant change the natural order of animals. But our dog hates all non vegeterian meals unless it’s dog food. I believe that all pet owners know their pets best.

It’s not advisable for vegan diets universally best for all dogs. We should do what suits our dogs the best.

I’ve been feeding my maltese V-Dog for two years now. We had tried several things- Science Diet, Dr Marty’s raw freeze dried, the food you buy in tubes at the grocery store- and none had as good an impact on her itching, stomach issues, or chronic borderline kidney issues as the V-Dog with half a scoop of Enzyme Miracle digestive enzymes, daily probiotics and a crushed up Beano. (Science Diet is some kind of racket- Google the ingredients). She adores their kind jerky snacks too, and she’s very picky.
Dr Pitcairn is on the board of advisors of VDog. He is a very famous holistic vet that updated his latest guide to include information on feeding your dog vegan food. He has recipes in there including the most common meal Bramble, the formerly Guinness World Record holder for longest-lived dog used to eat.

Please change the "vegan" to "plant based" – vegan is an ethical principle to avoid causing suffering as much as possible.

Also, please change the lettuce to papaya, mango, melon, etc. No dog is going to take lettuce.
