If you are making your dog’s food at home, ensure that you add these ingredients to have a balanced and healthy Dog Food Recipe.

KEY POINTS for Homemade Dog Food Diets

In general, for dogs stick to the macronutrients of 1/3 animal protein, 1/3 healthy carbohydrate ( ie sweet potato), 1/3 veggies ( ie kale or spinach), Fat in the form of Sunflower oil/Coconut oil, Fiber in the form of Ground Flax, plus a calcium supplement ( ground eggshell).

1. Focus on the Protein with balanced amino acid profiles (lean beef, chicken, turkey and egg)
2. The Carbohydrates are not necessary, but the ‘non’ grain carbs provide additional nutrients: Brown rice (fiber, protein, Calcium, Iron, Selenium and B vitamins), Sweet Potato ( Fiber, Protein, Vitamin A,C,E, Potassium and B vitamins), Potato (Potassium, Vitamin C, B vitamins)
3. Additional ‘balanced’ fat is necessary, a good Omega 6:3 balanced, nutritious fat I prefer is sunflower oil, but can also use Coconut oil.
4. Omega 3 Fatty Acid Supplement should be added in the form of Krill, Fish or Flax oil. Krill is the most nutrient dense and beneficial of all the products., with a great EPA/DHA fatty acid profile, contains the antioxidant Astaxanthin, and being high in Vitamin D.
5. Calcium is required as bones are not being consumed. I prefer Egg Shells : dried, roasted in the oven for 10 mins, then ground with a coffee grinder. You can also use OTC calcium carbonate.
6. Vitamins: Vitamin D is needed, but is in the egg yolks and red meat as well as being in high levels in the Krill or Fish oil. Vitamin E is in the Sunflower Oil and Coconut Oil
7. Minerals: Iron is in the animal protein and spinach/kale, Zinc is in the red meat and flax seeds, Copper is in the spinach, Iodine is on the Egg Yolks, Potassium is in the Sweet Potato and Regular Potato
8. Fiber: the veggies, the brown rice and the best source in my opinion (also the healthiest) is the ground flax.

  3. @norma2310 on April 1, 2025 at 3:55 am

The problem with sunflower oil today even organic alleged high quality is rancid. Once it’s rancid it’s oxidized and damaging to body. I have found that organic virgin coconut oil is consistently reliable.

I saw something about kale being high on heavy metals etc is this true? I have stopped using kale and giving spinach instead.

  7. @SunnyDlite84 on April 1, 2025 at 3:57 am

My American Bulldog, his fur falls out, yeast all over his body, making ME itch it’s so bad, within 12 hours of eating any kind of kibble, even the so called high end stuff. Dr Harveys veg to bowl, adding my own protein and oil does not do these things.

  13. @alenakytaz6577 on April 1, 2025 at 4:01 am

I changed the diet for my toy poodle. I start cooked for her but we still have diarrhea and sometimes she is eating her kibbles like a snack and I’m not sure. Should we keep going cook and wait little bit

  14. @yubafauna on April 1, 2025 at 4:02 am

No grains? I was just told to add in grains by our vet

  15. @FOXYF01 on April 1, 2025 at 4:02 am

Hello, is it possible to use fish, instead of meat? – my little man doesn’t do well with meat.
Unfortunately, he doesn’t do well with rice, either… thanks.

  16. @caroledavis-lh5to on April 1, 2025 at 4:02 am

Easy to understand the ingredients to make your dogs food. However, I have never done this before, I have to ask if the egg is going to be mixed into the cooked chicken and how about the sunflower oil? Do you use that to cook the chicken in, or is it folded in to all of the ingredients? Diet products that you see every veterinarians office, that does not mean it’s good for her. And I have been thinking about making her own food.

  17. @GalesTales on April 1, 2025 at 4:03 am

Is eggshell actually digestable by dogs?
Is eggshell digestable by humans? (like should I stop taking calcium and just crack and cook my entire egg!!!!) ha!

  18. @kristinachristian3914 on April 1, 2025 at 4:04 am

I am confused on the measurements, please help.
The description lists 1/3 animal protein, 1/3 healthy carbohydrate, & 1/3 veggies.
But the video says 1 lb ground turkey (2 cups) + 1-2 eggs, with 1 cup each of sweet potatoes and veggies.
Shouldn’t the amount of sweet potatoes & veggies both be doubled?
Thank You for Your video and recipe. You are greatly appreciated.

  20. @Set_Your_Mind_on_Things_Above on April 1, 2025 at 4:06 am

My dog dislikes veggies and flax. Should I try psyllium husk powder for fiber?

  21. @madhezfamily on April 1, 2025 at 4:11 am

Would this work for a diabetic dog?

  22. @RayGalactic on April 1, 2025 at 4:11 am

    Thank you!

  23. @faithshield591 on April 1, 2025 at 4:12 am

The sunflower oil is not healrhy for dogs or humans Its highly processed and all the nutrients are destroyed. Olive oil single country cold pressed is healthy

  24. @andrewnajar8755 on April 1, 2025 at 4:13 am

    Thank you😊

  25. @blister9366 on April 1, 2025 at 4:14 am

The egg shell i used to doblike that but they said the egg companies spray stuff on them, and its bad to feed to dogs, so i buy it already powdered

  26. @KayBoz-e7p on April 1, 2025 at 4:15 am

Make sure your egg shells you use are Not white. White egg shells are bleached. Natural eggs are brown. Use.
    Brown eggs

How much should be fed daily? We have a senior pitbull with Cushing’s, and a chubby 3 year old min-pin! Thank you 😊

  28. @elondawilliams7108 on April 1, 2025 at 4:18 am

Sorry I meant to ask oven temperature not time for egg shells.

  29. @douglasgrant8315 on April 1, 2025 at 4:19 am

I think he’s totally wrong about lean meats. The fat attached to the meat is healthy and any other that clings to the meat or is intertwined is good for the dog when digested it causes adipose fat to burn of the body.. Less carbs for the dog the better…

  30. @anonaki-mt6xb on April 1, 2025 at 4:24 am

Using seed oil such as Sunflower oil is a very bad idea. Steer clear of these oils regarding both Dogs and Humans.

  31. @carissapaglino4591 on April 1, 2025 at 4:25 am

Do you need to put the egg she,ls in the oven? I have just been washing them with warm water then drying on my kitchen window sill. Is this ok?

  32. @shar7508 on April 1, 2025 at 4:27 am

    Can dogs have peas?😊

  33. @lanamolczyk5139 on April 1, 2025 at 4:30 am

Are there any recipe changes you would make f 8:27 or a 15 # mini schnauzer with diabetes that is losing weight? He also has slightly elevated liver enzymes. Thanks so much

  34. @VJVV-e1m on April 1, 2025 at 4:32 am

I think this is all fine and good BUT seed oils aren’t good for humans. So I don’t think there exactly good for pets. Or any other animal. There original use is machine lubrication. I don’t plan on feeding my pets Castrol

  35. @nygal5689 on April 1, 2025 at 4:32 am

    What is the recipe?

  36. @KayBoz-e7p on April 1, 2025 at 4:34 am

Boooooo no sunflower oil! Olive olive olive!! Sunfower is the bad fats

  37. @sammysworld5485 on April 1, 2025 at 4:34 am

Why is no one talking about high oxalates in a dogs diet since this applies to human as well. I definitely altered my home made dog recipes after reading “Toxic Super Foods” by Sally K. Norton, after my own health scare. It was an eye opener. Definitely no spinach, no sweet potatoes , brown rice or nuts.

  38. @LawDev-j2v on April 1, 2025 at 4:35 am

Also, can I substitute sweet potato for quinoa?

  40. @Bibi-qf2nd on April 1, 2025 at 4:36 am

Thank you Dr Jones for all your videos they are so helpful and educational. I am very often checking your channel if I need something for my Cavalier. It helps a lot. There are so many different opinions about dog food ingredients. I am cooking food for my dog. Would you please advise which of this ingredients are not good for dogs: green beans, beets, oats, chickpeas, red and white beans, rise, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, peas. Thank you.

  42. @shar7508 on April 1, 2025 at 4:40 am

Krill oil doesn’t have as much DHA and EPA as fish oil. So which is best?😊
