If you are making your dog’s food at home, ensure that you add these ingredients to have a balanced and healthy Dog Food Recipe.

KEY POINTS for Homemade Dog Food Diets

In general, for dogs stick to the macronutrients of 1/3 animal protein, 1/3 healthy carbohydrate ( ie sweet potato), 1/3 veggies ( ie kale or spinach), Fat in the form of Sunflower oil/Coconut oil, Fiber in the form of Ground Flax, plus a calcium supplement ( ground eggshell).

1. Focus on the Protein with balanced amino acid profiles (lean beef, chicken, turkey and egg)
2. The Carbohydrates are not necessary, but the ‘non’ grain carbs provide additional nutrients: Brown rice (fiber, protein, Calcium, Iron, Selenium and B vitamins), Sweet Potato ( Fiber, Protein, Vitamin A,C,E, Potassium and B vitamins), Potato (Potassium, Vitamin C, B vitamins)
3. Additional ‘balanced’ fat is necessary, a good Omega 6:3 balanced, nutritious fat I prefer is sunflower oil, but can also use Coconut oil.
4. Omega 3 Fatty Acid Supplement should be added in the form of Krill, Fish or Flax oil. Krill is the most nutrient dense and beneficial of all the products., with a great EPA/DHA fatty acid profile, contains the antioxidant Astaxanthin, and being high in Vitamin D.
5. Calcium is required as bones are not being consumed. I prefer Egg Shells : dried, roasted in the oven for 10 mins, then ground with a coffee grinder. You can also use OTC calcium carbonate.
6. Vitamins: Vitamin D is needed, but is in the egg yolks and red meat as well as being in high levels in the Krill or Fish oil. Vitamin E is in the Sunflower Oil and Coconut Oil
7. Minerals: Iron is in the animal protein and spinach/kale, Zinc is in the red meat and flax seeds, Copper is in the spinach, Iodine is on the Egg Yolks, Potassium is in the Sweet Potato and Regular Potato
8. Fiber: the veggies, the brown rice and the best source in my opinion (also the healthiest) is the ground flax.

I’m trying to find out how many scoops per container are in your ultimate advanced canine supplement. I have two dogs and each one will be taken a different dose so I’m trying to calculate how long a container will last. Also are any in the ingredients from China?

  2. @victoriacheramie946 on December 17, 2024 at 4:27 pm

What a concept all these great foods i already buy for myself and my family … I kinda feel dumb for wasting so much money trying to get "better quality" kibble ..

  3. @victoriacheramie946 on December 17, 2024 at 4:28 pm

Is it okay to just crush and cook a whole egg shell and all in the mix?? Why do you roast and grind it first. Honestly im asking after the fact….ive already done the former a couple times and she eats it fine..

  4. @meloriginals7739 on December 17, 2024 at 4:31 pm

People in my area need reduced price meat to eat meat. These home dog food makers are taking food from PEOPLES mouths

Sweet potato is not good for dogs High in sugar

Hi Doc,, Do you ever use raw eggs and are they better than cooked or hard boiled ? Thanks

  7. @user-wq3jp3qg1o on December 17, 2024 at 4:37 pm

Why can’t I just feed my dog the same things I eat?

Thank You so much for producing this Video. 😊

  9. @FeedMeJuice on December 17, 2024 at 4:41 pm

My problem is serving size 😭 like for a 50 pound dog. How much food am I giving? Because after I give two cups of chicken, rice and veggies they’re still acting like they are starved!

  10. @mosspiglet_ on December 17, 2024 at 4:41 pm

Do you cook the meat and eggs or do you give it all raw? Also if you don’t want to give a supplement or tablet, what can you use for the Omega fats? Sardines? Or other fish?

  11. @toughtimes7388 on December 17, 2024 at 4:41 pm

I’ve been using chicken gizzards, chicken and beef liver, kale, sweet potato, yellow squash, carrots, blueberries and raw oatmeal. I give my dog one cup of commercial food and supplement that with one cup of the homemade supplement.
She was badly emaciated when I found her abandoned; on the side of the road. The commercial food alone, even puppy food; did nothing for her. I started adding my supplemental food and, she finally started gaining mass. What are your thoughts Doc?

Thank you for all the awesome help in keeping our pooch happy and healthy.
I’m also cooking fresh food for out cookapoo, however she is allergic to chicken, turkey, eggs… I have been cooking pork, liver (other organs if available too) sweet potato, peas, rice and carrots.
After watching your video, I will add kayle and flex seeds.
I would prefer lamb or beef but price is an issue.
Is pork ok, I’m getting mixt information?

  16. @johnpublic3524 on December 17, 2024 at 4:46 pm

I make homemade dog food all of the time, i use pumpkin, sweet potato, yam, squash with beef or chicken heart, liver, kidney fresh rabbit or whole chicken along with coconut oil pumpkin seed and a bit of garlic…

  17. @mamat792 on December 17, 2024 at 4:46 pm

Why aren’t you just giving the entire egg? My lab seems to have allergies and does well on duck (not all duck foods though). I’m looking for something to improve his diet even thought the "kibble" is a high quality kibble. I realize it is that. He does get krill or salmon oil. I’d like to had an egg, kale, sweet potato or kefir. How do you know how much to add and how much to deduct? And keeping it balanced? It would be quite an expense to feed a 90 lb dog raw/home cooked daily.

  18. @williamhines2842 on December 17, 2024 at 4:47 pm

Is it alright to feed feed dogs pork?

  19. @adav19 on December 17, 2024 at 4:47 pm

I know this is an old video, but I came here to learn how to cook a nutritionally balanced meal for my dog because she’s picky; and her name happens to be “Toula.”

  20. @pamelabattle736 on December 17, 2024 at 4:47 pm

My dog eats twice a day. He’s 25 pounds and I give him 1 3/4 cups a day split 2 servings. 3/4 in the day and 1 cup at night Should I give him half of a scoop of the supplement in the morning meal and a entire scoop in the night meal?

Should the meat be cooked or raw?

  27. @368engbn on December 17, 2024 at 4:54 pm

My dog loves Onion Rings and garlic bread.

  28. @alexarmstrong578 on December 17, 2024 at 4:58 pm

Give them meat, fish or chicken raw. It’s their natural diet. Veggies, grains and potatoes offer nothing essential for dogs. Ever hear of a wolf eating broccoli or sweet potatoes? I didn’t think so.

  29. @mnapier2210 on December 17, 2024 at 4:58 pm

Your supplemenot store do not have a human being answering the phone. Why? I need to know which to give my dogs… is your complete "complete"? Why have just the omegas? Why have separate fiber?

I noticed that no organs were included in this food? Is that not needed? It would be so helpful to have someone helping

Hey Dr Jones. I just discovered your videos. I’m very thankful to you for breaking it all down. I hope you have a video on homemade dogfood for people like me who are on a fixed income. I just want to tell you that I appreciate the information. I rescued 2 dogs off the street, and they go through about 50 lbs of kibble a month. I want to start incorporating homemade food into their kibble to help them get the vitamins and minerals they need. Unfortunately, I cannot afford supplements nor can I afford to feed them only homemade food. (They are American pitties and one weighs around 100 lbs.). They eat a lot, lol. But I was wondering could you please tell me what a good ratio would be with homemade added to their kibble? Thank you so much.

  45. @mamat792 on December 17, 2024 at 5:21 pm

What is the best way to improve sludge in the gallbladder (11 yo lab). Been going through testing and not finished yet, but he is otherwise healthy all other organs have check out good in an ultrasound. Continuing w/ more in-depth blood and urine testing. What brought on the concern was drinking a lot more water and a couple of night time accidents in his sleep. Always looking for homeopathic remedies, especially those that can easily be done at home.
