Eco-Friendly Cat Tips | Zero Waste Cat Tips

Hi world!
My name is Shelbi.

Today I wanted to give some alternatives to typical products used for cats. Some are plastic free, zero waste, and eco-friendly.
As far as I know, cats cannot be vegan, and I am simply not willing to purchase human grade meat from the super market and hand make it for my cat. I know I am very lucky to have a bulk cat food option where I live, but I do my best to give plastic free alternatives to this.

Let me know if you have any additional tips, and I will link below all of the things I mentioned.

I use 100% compost grocery trash bag for my cats’s litter .

  2. @industrial-ghost on June 11, 2025 at 1:12 pm

I need a sifting litter box for pine pellets, but I also want it to be stainless steel because 1. obviously want to avoid plastic and 2. It doesn’t absorb odors and it’s easier to clean

I can find sifting litter boxes,
I can find stainless steel litter boxes,
but I can’t find sifting stainless steel litter boxes. I don’t think anyone makes them…
I thought, maybe, I could use a strainer, but then I have to find one with small enough holes and a big enough size

why is everything so hard i just want to be good to tje environment whu is.tjis do hard heaealp me.please

  3. @SunflowerKidAugust on June 11, 2025 at 1:16 pm

a sock that you’d get rid of anyway filled with catnip works great, or an old shoe lace/string attached to just about any fabric scrap

Hi Shelbi, you’re probably the only YouTuber that I will watch every single video produced because I just love your education on Eco-Minimalism that I don’t see enough of here. With that being said can you pleaseeeeeee do an updated video of your cat care? Would love to see your take on this!!

  5. @BloodyWiccaG on June 11, 2025 at 1:17 pm

Thanks for telling cats are not meant to be vegan, probably hearing it from someone like you that makes so much effort for the planet is important. It makes me so worried that nowadays people are trying to make their carnivorous pets vegan…

  6. @ShamanicSpring on June 11, 2025 at 1:19 pm

Love your video! Thanks. Only one change: please don’t let your cat outdoors–they’re bad for the environment.

  7. @FourPartFox on June 11, 2025 at 1:20 pm

I got reeeaaally worried when you started talking about veganism in a video about cat care, but I kept watching, and I’m glad I did. Standing up for a cat’s proper diet earns you a rarely bestowed like from me, my friend.

I’m so glad you don’t make him be vegan VEGAN CATS SUFFER

Hi Shelbi, sorry I’m watching this 2 years later but you mentioned in this video some biodegradable bags for poop and said you would link them but I don’t see the link. I can’t compost where I am so I am looking for that option. I would like to stop flushing my cat’s poop as I had no idea that was harmful to marine life.

  11. @rachelemarie741 on June 11, 2025 at 1:23 pm

I use Ekocat litter. It’s made of natural wood and it still clumps well. No dust and traps in odors. Plus is biodegradable and the box it comes in is recyclable. 🙂

  12. @OutdoorKris on June 11, 2025 at 1:24 pm

Fish is probably the best meat to eat when it comes to environmental protection 😊

  13. @Acrylara on June 11, 2025 at 1:24 pm

People flush them down the toilet? or scoop them in plastic bags?
In Germany there comes a shovel with the litter box, or you buy the shovel… and then you scoop it up with that, put it in a little bin and then empty the bin in the big trashcan outside (ya know the one the trash men empty every once in a while) voila

  14. @practicepositiveprogress5396 on June 11, 2025 at 1:24 pm

So you say you scoop your cat poop into the trash bag you are already using, if I’m already using plastic bags for trash, is that okay? I mean I understand that the plastic is still bad but in my bedroom I reuse plastic grocery bags as my trash bags because I accumulate about that much trash each week/two weeks, and my cats litter just goes in those bags with my bedroom trash. Basically I’m already using plastic grocery bags as trash bags in my house instead of buying trash bags… I am trying to get into the habit of using reusable bags, but for some reason it’s a habit I struggle with, so even as I’m getting better at it, I have a large hoard of plastic bags that I keep as a stash of trash bags.

Anytime I see that you post it makes my day. You bring such a happy, and bright vibe to my life! Off topic but your makeup is stunning!!! If you don’t mind me asking, what lashes are you wearing? Regardless, please keep posting. You & your content is VERY much appreciated. I wish there was a “Eco-Tube”🤣♥️

Hello Shelbi, do you have an updated version of this or know another youtuber that has tips for pets?

  17. @Mythrose on June 11, 2025 at 1:26 pm

Do you know if you can put cat poop in city compost?

  18. @rachaeltang9247 on June 11, 2025 at 1:27 pm

Hi the compost bag link isn’t working

  19. @taralounsbury8139 on June 11, 2025 at 1:27 pm

I use the wood pellets for my cats. I can get them at the local tractor supply store. It’s only $5 a bag and i turns into saw dust which is composable.

  20. @hannahbravo3970 on June 11, 2025 at 1:31 pm

I have been buying rechargeable toys so I dont have to use batteries

  21. @LunaMakesStuff on June 11, 2025 at 1:31 pm

I might be a little late on this but I really loved your video. A really good alternative for conventional cat litters are wood pellets. I have been using those for my cats for a long time. They are more eco-friendly, compostable and often they are available in paper packaging. They usually are made out of scraps of the wood industry so that’s a good thing too.
Also I thought I hab to mention that dry food is really bad for cats because they are biologically unable to drink all the liquid that they would consume in their natural diet (mice etc.). Plus dry food typically contains a lot of wheat which cats aren’t supposed to eat as well.
There are really good canned foods out there. I sadly only know german brands. But BARF also is a really good option for feeding cats and it gives you full control over the information that go into the food.

  22. @geenskeen on June 11, 2025 at 1:32 pm

I know this is an old video, but I’m wondering if you could elaborate on the concerns of using compostable bags (like biobags that need an industrial composting facility) and sending it to landfill. I’ve been finding second hand diaper genie refills to use since we scoop the litter everyday (as recommended) and don’t want to throw away a bag everytime. We thought it wasn’t any better to get biodegradable bags since they aren’t going to break down in a landfill anyway.

  23. @TDWC on June 11, 2025 at 1:32 pm

Even if the cat poop is thrown into a biodegradable bag, doesn’t it still go to trash and hence to landfills? It will biodegrade among other harmful materials and create methane which is a much potent greenhouse gas than CO2. Unless we are using biodegradable bags 2-3 times (similar to what your sister is doing with plastic), it may not be much different? What other alternatives are out there to dispose of cat poop? I know we can’t compost it. Any suggestions will be valuable. Thanks! 🙂

  24. @N_no_you on June 11, 2025 at 1:33 pm

Man, never realised how much of a consumption bish my cat is. Got to cut those paws off to reduce the print

  25. @dupriideliaemanuela1810 on June 11, 2025 at 1:34 pm

For the cat food it has to be considered the quality of the food… after I’ve done a lot of research on what i should feed my cat I’m not willing to switch cause i need to put my cat’s health first.

  26. @onthegovegan2619 on June 11, 2025 at 1:34 pm

This is great tips/advice, I agree with other comments. Please create a update for 2021 of this video. I’m looking to adopt a kitty in the near future 🐱

  27. @satbq1 on June 11, 2025 at 1:35 pm

Look into TofuKitty. I don’t like their packaging, but maybe we can get them to use paper bagging. They have been very receptive to suggestions

  28. @carriefurr1 on June 11, 2025 at 1:38 pm

The charcoal absorbers are coming up unavailable?

  29. @EmmaEiram on June 11, 2025 at 1:38 pm

Shelbi! It would be amazing to get an updated version of this video now that you have your own homestead!

  30. @andreacarolina2912 on June 11, 2025 at 1:41 pm

Hi Shelby<3 could you remake this video? I got a kitty not too long ago and I wonder how you choose the food, litterbox, litter, and if I can recycle the cans for their food. I’d love to see what you use today and what are newer things you recommend? thank you!

  31. @hhleannem5237 on June 11, 2025 at 1:41 pm

Please never make your own cat food unless you consult a licensed veterinary nutritionist. Balanced diets for animals are important and you cannot do this on your own through a Google search. Even buying from small sellers is not recommended because they usually don’t consult nutritionalists and are not AAFCO recommended.

  32. @dilailamarie6549 on June 11, 2025 at 1:43 pm

I think you should do another low waste pet routine! Love your videos💕

  33. @RiverJanewayRoslin on June 11, 2025 at 1:44 pm

Everytime I have a sustainability question you have the answer. You’re amazing!

  34. @brookejoyce9941 on June 11, 2025 at 1:49 pm

is there an updated version for you?

  35. @MizzBellaKitty on June 11, 2025 at 1:51 pm

Forcing a cat to eat a vegan diet is animal cruelty! Thank you for not forcing a plant-based diet on your feline! Felines are like snakes. They are obligate carnivores. I also don’t trust a vegan diet for a dog unless your vet says it’s safe.

  36. @ionundercover3871 on June 11, 2025 at 1:53 pm

This was so helpful!!! Thankyou SO SO much!

  37. @lorerojas2729 on June 11, 2025 at 1:54 pm

Hey Shelbi! Great video, thank you so much. Would love to see a more up to date version of this. Like now that there are more research on why cats shouldn’t eat dry food all the time- or at all and now that are more eco-friendly options of litter! It would be awesome:)

  38. @nasjiaglenn1869 on June 11, 2025 at 1:55 pm

I love using walnut shell litter. No dust and it has no smell once peed in.

  39. @evelynda5235 on June 11, 2025 at 1:57 pm

You can make your own cat food and support a regenerative farm that is actually a positive for the environment. If u can afford it.

Zero waste tips for reptile owners! Buy in bulk, feeder insects can be expensive but buying in bulk makes it infinetly cheaper! Also look in thift stores like savers cause you will always see brand new reptile bedding, and accessories for much cheaper! Or if you have reptiles like leopard geckos and beared dragons (who tend to eat the substrate which can be harmful) you can just use old newspaper which is what i use.(:

Hi! I know this video is old but I feel really compelled to comment which I don’t normally do. Only when it’s really necessary. SO. toxiplasma gondii is the bacteria you are referring to I believe. I study marine mammals for a living. T. gondii affects way more than just otters (which are only on the west coast where you are or were). it affects dolphins and pretty much any cetaceans (dolphins, porpoises, and some whales). SO. much bigger issue than you let on. ALSO, dry food is terrible for cats. I know aluminum cans isn’t ideal, but wet food really is best for all cats – even the worst quality wet food is better for your cat than the best quality dry food. dry food is incredibly dehydrating and can cause kidney and urinary and bladder issues. my cat has those issues DESPITE my feeding him only wet food mostly for the entire time I had him. male cats are particularly susceptible. PLEASE feed your cats the best food possible regardless of your morals. I’m so glad you are against vegan cats – I am too. It’s too risky. BUT there is so much more you left out that will lead to your cat’s ideal health. at least aluminum cans are recyclable. definitely do not buy those plastic pouches of cat food that are newer and hyped up. stick with bags but ideally cans of wet food. thanks so much! I love your channel and I have been following you as of recently only and have taken tons of your advice. I started with no paper towels a year ago and have started slowly adding more low waste alternatives more recently. cat lovers unite with low-waste-ocean-friendly marine mammal nerds!

Also stainless steel kitty litter pans which will last you a life time and its not plastic biodegradable natural litter for order control baking soda

  46. @lisacardenas6148 on June 11, 2025 at 2:06 pm

With the walnut litter, do you still put it in the trash? I hate the idea of all these plastic bags of used litter. What do you do with it? I have a big yard but is it safe to
    Put out in a yard

  47. @mykalashew7385 on June 11, 2025 at 2:06 pm

As someone who DOES eat meat, what to you think about getting fresh meat? I live on a dairy farm so if there is any reason we have to put a cow down I can usually get fresh meat as long as the cow wasn’t sick with anything. I can also get fresh milk and cream this way.

  48. @alanavanwoodsen on June 11, 2025 at 2:07 pm

Idk if I’m doing it right but i hope I’m close, i use tofu cat litter so i can flush em into the toilet (instead of woodchips, they stink! 😅) then recycling the package, make my own cat wet food, buy dry food in bulks like shelby, n upcycling my daughter her baby rattle doll for cat toys, thank god she don’t mind em. 😂
Oh! I groomed my cat every 2 weeks or once a month so i don’t have to invest in her grooming accessories like shampoo, perfume, nail clipper, etc. I also upcycling my old hair brush, my cat is angora so yeah, she needs brushing.
Use reusable hair/fur lint remover or just invest on a good vacuum cleaner..

  49. @mnunezhk on June 11, 2025 at 2:09 pm

ooorrrr buy paper bags and put the poop in there
