Almost ALL cast did has fish oil. It is hard to find cat food that doesn’t have fish oil as an ingredient. And the foods that doesn’t have fish oil in them are extremely expensive.

I give my 13 years old chihuahua skate liver oil drops (about 5 drops a day) with his food. he’s more active, playful no arthritis, no joint issues. but he had been developing more itch. .He would sctach and sometimes drags himself on the carpet rug. now I’m stopping the drops to see if he’s allergy to it

Our cat BB was put on Meloxicam for arthritis and took it for 2 weeks. . It did not really help him at all and could
potentially harm is kidneys. We started to give him Krill oil and he is like a new man. He is showing no signs of stiffness and is remarkably happier. This is after 7 days.

    Hi Dr, hi everyone.
Our lab is a tad overweight. Do you discourage using fish oil on dogs who need to lose the extra weight?
Also, please clarify for future reference and personal knowledge. Dr. Jones said it is ok to give fish oil to dogs who might have pancreatitis?
Also, it is ok to give to dogs eho have kidney issues?
Would appreciate anyone’s thoughts on the matter. We will starting to supplement our dogs with fish oil soon.

We know that fatty liver in people is caused by fructose, sucrose, and other carbs, not fat. I’ve wondered about pancreatitis in dogs, since we know now, how beneficial fats are to our diets and theirs? What is the cause?

  38. @mikahundin on February 13, 2025 at 10:21 pm

Title: "Don’t give your Pets Fish Oil UNLESS you are doing these 5 Things"

    1. Get an accurate diagnosis before using omega-3 fatty acids to treat a condition in your dog or cat, ensuring they have a condition that can respond to them.

    2. Be aware of potential toxins (mercury, PCBs) in fish oil supplements, and consider using krill oil instead, which is lower in contaminants.

    3. Ensure proper absorption by giving the supplement with food that contains some fat.

    4. Avoid giving essential fatty acids if your pet has a bleeding disorder or is scheduled for surgery, as they can delay clotting time.

    5. Give the correct dosage (e.g., 500 mg of krill oil per 20 lbs of body weight daily) for a long enough period (at least 90 days) before assessing the effectiveness.

  45. @lisbethchristensen1981 on February 13, 2025 at 10:28 pm

The safest omega 3 capsules for dogs, are from algae. It’s easily found online, and in most health stores. They come in capsules, which you can easily break the seal of, and drizzle over their wet dog food. Don’t feed dogs kibble.
