I have the large bowls. Great for water. Not the best for food.

We have stainless steel bowls for our cats. I don’t know how to solve this problem: We can never tell how full or empty they are by sight. We actually have to bend down and look and stick our finger in there to get the water level. The water is invisible in the stainless. I thought we could put some blue food coloring in the water, but that probably isn’t good for the kitties. What have other people done? My husband has a bad back and a big belly so bending down is a big issue for him.
